FROM: Monday 21st December 2009 - Sunday 3rd January 2010

OPENING TIMES: 1 - 6pm

OPENING RECEPTION: Monday 31st December 6.30 - 8.30pm

Donegal born Artist Martin Gillen exhibits a series of pencil portraits with a slightly political theme. The portraits depict a selection of people from Irish society who have worked quietly behind the scenes over the years helping the struggle for a better and more just society thus the title "Outside the Box".

Martin Gillen is a Donegal born artist based in Dublin. This is his first solo exhibition in Dublin. He has exhibited his work in numerous group shows in Derry, Galway and Donegal and has sold work across the world - Germany, Canada, USA, Australia, England, Scotland and Ireland.

His work has appeared in many areas including sign writing, pub art and slate paintings some of which are displayed in the Porterhouse, Temple Bar.

Pencil is a medium that is rarely considered as a finished product, but this artist takes advantage of the inherent qualities found in the basic everyday pencil and exploits very effectively the range of values possible with this medium to express texture, character and life. The artist's objective is to effectively reproduce the texture of the human head - eyes, skin and hair all have distinctively different textures and this artist imitates these textures realistically and effectively with the medium of pencil and a
combination of techniques.
