Roisin
Sheridan | Statement:
I have always been captivated by thoughts
and daydreams, watching a person caught up in a distant or imaginative
world. I am particularly interested in perceptions of escapism,
daydreams, a personal heaven, a favourite place, a place to feel
comfortable and enveloped, a place that evokes a particular emotion.
I am keen to explore the simplest form of artistic expression, drawing.
This work captures the people in my surroundings unaware. The person
is so encapsulated in their own thoughts that they do not notice
the viewer. These snapshots of everyday life capture these brief
moments. It intrigues me to discover what the person is thinking
of, perhaps caught in a daydream. Stripped of colour the work leans
towards the use of fine line, the focus becomes the portrayal of
the image rather than the intensity of colour.

Sheridan | Statement:
‘Stillness’ is an exhibition comprised of a series
of miniature delicate pieces, deliberately tattered and fatigued.
The backdrops of my collages are formed by abstract washes inspired
by the colours of vast foreign landscapes, layered with the fading
images of people from my present environment. Crumbling surfaces
collapse softly into nothingness, illuminated by flashes of explosive
colour. Reminiscent of stained antique maps, faded and torn with
use, yet quickened by the vibrancy of flickering city lights or
the awe inspiring beauty of pure white snow, My work seeks to
capture an ethereal and dreamlike atmosphere. I seek to explore
atmospheric episodes in my immediate proximity. I am fascinated
by fleeting moments, the beauty that lies in ordinary unplanned
instances. People
captured unaware, lost in thought, consumed with daydreams and
distracted by secret heartache. Precious moments, regrets, contentment,
a longing for escapism, all of the things that haunt us internally
and reveal our hidden vulnerabilities. I am deeply inspired by
these moments of great beauty, by the fragility of relationships,
youthful innocence, existence, erosion and by the eventual disappearance
of our paths through life. I
am keen to preserve these passing moments. It is as if the pieces
have been discovered moth-eaten in a dusty attic, reclaimed from
another world where time stands still.
