Opening 25th March 2008

Exhibition continues 26th - 30th March

Reconfiguration | Miriam Sweeney

The focus of this exhibition is an installation that uses everyday objects and toys – which through lighting and composition invites viewers to participate in the notion of inversion. It reverses the Platonic ideal of moving towards the light, yet paradoxically, embraces the concept through the use of shadow. For the duration of the show the artist will work in situ, on drawings sourced from the installation and its concerns. This duality of both working and exhibiting simultaneously, is reflective of and a continuation of the binary nature of the installation. The composition for the installation is sourced from Piero della Francesca’s The Triumphs of Duke Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza.

Artist Statement | Shadow Maps and Otherness

"I am interested in explorations of otherness and psychological drama. The impetus for my work is primarily visual. My work is imbued with a longing to uncover and glimpse a sense of otherness in everyday reality – the foul rag and bone shop of the heart. This ‘longing’ is reflected in a fundamental way by the presence and use of toys in my work. Source material that consistently presents itself as suitable for the exploration of otherness are: shadow, fetus, birds, medical reference, movement and plants.
I use a combination of tools and techniques – drawing, video, animation, 3D and working with found objects to hopefully articulate complex imagery and observations. I view it as a tentative weaving that is still paradoxically a fragmentation – how to tear a tear, can you tear a shadow and can I make a shed of tears. What is seen from one side of a screen to the other? To make an object that does not work in the light of day yet can work as a shadow. I use the facile and the mundane and attempt to transfigure them to a sphere of ‘otherness’ and hence attempt to comment on our endless journey from the banal to the sublime."

The exhibition opens on Tuesday 25th March from 7 - 9pm.

Opening hours: 1 - 7pm from Wednesday 26th to Sunday 30th March and by appointment.
