”The View of Photography: Afterparty Portraits” - the
latest body of work from Dublin based photographic artist and curator
Darek Fortas. This exhibition is a photographic exploration of trance
music community in Dublin. Fortas represents the conditions of an
alternative, utopian lifestyle and photographically examines the
notion of escapism during the changed economic and social situation
in Ireland.
There's a certain
rigor of representation in Fortas' images - idea of formal treatment
of the subjects, the same place where all individuals were photographed,
consistent composition of all pictures – it all subscribes
to the notion “sameness” that is rooted deeply in Fortas
photographic practice. “The View of Photography: After-Party
Portraits” doesn't follow the classical notion of documentary,
yet its powerful photographic documentation of social, economic
and environmental landscape in modern Ireland.
Apart of the
documenting the notion of escapism “The View of Photography:
After-Party Portraits” aims to add new, necessary perspective
to the contemporary debate regarding photographic portraiture: what
the photograph of a human being can possibly communicate, how the
dynamics of a face-to-face meeting are necessarily altered by the
inclusion of a camera and how these affect the resulting image.
